The Grievers are major antagonists within James Dashner's novel The Maze Runner.
A horrifying mix of flesh and metal, the Griever's flesh body is covered in slimy, blubbery flesh. They have several cybernetic appendages that they can use to roll and sting other lifeforms with a potent version of the Flare (as stated in The Fever Code) that is cured using a substance known as the "Grief Serum". They also possibly feed off of human bodies.
Though largely animalistic, the Grievers show some signs of intelligent thought. A few Grievers were able to play dead.
History[]
The origins of the Grievers are largely unknown (at least from reading only The Maze Runner). Presumably, they were created by WICKED.
In The Maze Runner, the Grievers served as sentinels of the Maze. At night, the Grievers came out to hunt any Gladers trapped in the Maze - either eating them or injecting them with the Grief Serum. In the daytime, the Grievers escaped the Maze and left for the "Griever Hole" (a small computer room below the Maze).
Once the end of the Maze trial was triggered, the Griever's behaviour changed. They roamed into the Glade and began snatching only one Glader at a time (though it is possible that they always acted like this) and then left for the Griever Hole.
During the Glader charge towards the Griever hole, a horde of Grievers attacked the army of Gladers - killing Alby along with half of the Glader army while suffering heavy casualties of their own - before they were switched off by Teresa.
Information from the other books should be added.
