Rodney William Whitaker (better known by his penname Trevanian, 1931-2005) was an author. Trevanian is best known for his thriller novels.

Life[]

Born in the town of Granville, New York in June of 1931, Rodney lived in poverty for much of his early years (several of which were spent in Albany), Rodney was educated at the University of Washington, where he wrote and directed a three-act play under the guidance of Jerry Pournelle. After receiving a master's degree in drama from Washington, he got a doctorate in communications and film from Northwestern University in Illinois.

Rodney then taught at the private Dana College in the Nebraska city of Blair - becoming the chairman of the university's communications division - before joining the Navy and serving in the Korean War and receiving a Fulbright scholarship. While writing The Eiger Sanction and The Loo Sanction, Rodney (who had taken the name "Trevanian" based on his wife's appreciation of the historian G. M. Trevelyan) was working at the University of Texas at Austin as the chairman of their Department of Radio, TV, and Film.
