The Llanfairfach Rebellion is a short story written by Sue Hampton. Released in 2019, it is part of Candy Jar's Lucy Wilson Mysteries series (being reprinted in the collection Back in London) and tells of Lucy and Hobo visiting a protest.

Characters[]

  • Lucy Wilson
  • Hobo Kostinen
  • Josephine - possibly a reference to Josephine Grant
  • Conall Lethbridge-Stewart
  • Hannah Lethbridge-Stewart

Plot[]

As the Easter holidays of 2019 begin, Lucy and Hobo decide to take part in climate protests being held in London - specifically one being held at Waterloo Bridge. Shortly after arriving at the bridge, Lucy is offered free sunscreen and lathers it on. After putting the sunscreen on, Lucy becomes more aggressive - seeing Hobo as a "bald nitwit" and thinking about attacking police officers. Hobo attempts to get ahold of her sunscreen while Lucy tries to jump off the bridge. While Lucy fails to launch herself off the bridge, Hobo also fails to get ahold of the sunscreen until Lucy faints.

When Lucy comes to, Hobo reveals that the free sunscreen (which was supplied by "Llanfairfach Chemicals") has tiny maggots within it. As Lucy slowly recovers, she postulates that Llanfairfach Chemicals supplied the sunscreen to sabotage the protests for their own gain. While back on the street, Lucy finds that her time ring has been stolen. While she finds the thief, said thief is found by a police officer who has been influenced by the sunscreen. The officer takes the ring and plans to arrest Lucy but she simply drops a cup of water on him (which seemingly reverses the effects of the sunscreen) before taking the ring from him. While Lucy and Hobo leave the protests, they watch as a protestor wearing a Grim Reaper costume lathers on sunscreen.

Notes[]

  • This short story is a pseudo-sequel to the Doctor Who serial The Green Death.

In-universe continuity[]

  • Lucy mentions the events of several of her previous adventures - such as Curse of the Mirror Clowns and Avatars of the Intelligence.
