The Quran (or the Qur'an and Koran) is the religious text of the Islamic faith. Believed by Muslims to have been revealed to the prophet Muhammad (who was illiterate) by Allah, the Quran is comprised of 114 surahs.
Publisher's Summary[]
The Koran is universally accepted by Muslims to be the infallible Word of God as first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel nearly fourteen hundred years ago. Its 114 chapters, or surahs, recount the narratives central to Muslim belief, and together they form one of the world's most influential prophetic works and a literary masterpiece in its own right. But above all, the Koran provides the rules of conduct that remain fundamental to the Muslim faith today: prayer, fasting, pilgrimage to Mecca and absolute faith in God.

Surah I: The Opening[]
Despite being only eight sentences, the first surah is (arguably) the most important surah in the Quran. The surah is thus:
| “ | In the name of Allah, the Beneficient, the Merciful.
1. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, 2. The Beneficent, the Merciful. 3. Owner of the Day of Judgment, 4. Thee we worship; Thee we ask for help. 5. Show us the straight path, 6. The path of those whom Thou has favoured; 7. Not of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray. |
