  • The Peerless One

Plot[]

In the south of Wales lived a knight named Milun. He is one of the best knights in the area, without any serious competition. One day, Milun notices the daughter of a local baron and two begin an affair. Their secret relationship leads to Milun's lover falling pregnant. Though she greatly loves Milun, this makes the woman despondent as she fears being known for giving birth to a child out of wedlock. With the help of an old woman, Milun's lover is able to hide her pregnancy. Once the boy is born, she gives the baby to Milun's sister in Northumbria with a letter and a ring, alongside some silk.

Milun's lover is married by her father to another man. To keep in contact with her, Milun has a goose sent to her with a note hidden within its feathers. After finding the letter, Milun's lover writes one back and sends the goose back to Milun. This continues for twenty years.

By that time, Milun's son has become a knight just like him. He gains great renown and is known as "The Peerless One". Not knowing that the Peerless One is his son, Milun decides to fight him at the tournament on the island of Mont Saint-Michel before looking for his son. During the battle, the Peerless One succeeds. After realizing that his opponent is an old man, the Peerless One approaches to give his respects. Once the two are close by, Milun realizes that the Peerless One is his long-lost son from the ring on his finger. The two reunite and plot to kill the husband of the Peerless One's mother. Once in Wales, a messenger tells them that the husband of Milun's lover has died. Shortly after this, the lovers reunite and the Peerless One arranges the marriage of his mother and father.
