Katniss Everdeen is the main protagonist and the narrator of The Hunger Games trilogy. After her younger sister, Primrose, was reaped to participate in the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss volunteered to take her place as the female tribute from District 12. This action set in motion the events of the entire series.

In the movies, Katniss is portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence - who also played Mystique in the X-Men movies, Ree Dolly in Winter's Bone (the adaptation of Daniel Woodrell's novel), the titular heroine in Serena (the adaptation of Ron Rash's novel), and Dominika Egorova in Red Sparrow (the adaptation of Jason Matthews' novel)

Primrose Everdeen[]
Katniss and Prim Before the Reaping

Katniss comforts Prim before the reaping after Prim tells Katniss about her nightmare.

Primrose, otherwise know as Prim, is Katniss’s younger sister by four years. During the 74th Annual Hunger Games Reaping, Prim’s name was called. Katniss volunteered for the first time ever in district 12, and took Prim’s place in the games. This action set the entire plot for the trilogy in motion.

During the games, Katniss meets Rue and is reminded of Prim. When Rue is dying, she is made Katniss promise to win for her sister. Katniss takes this to heart and decided to win for both Rue and Prim.

In Mockingjay, Prim starts giving Katniss advice. When Prim is killed in a bombing in the Capitol, Katniss becomes depressed and loses herself in the loss of her younger sister. While being in the Victor’s Village in District 12, Buttercup, Prim’s old cat that Katniss threatened to drown when he first lived with the Everdeen family, comes to visit her. This remind’s Katniss that Prim wouldn’t want her to be like this, and that gives her motivation to defeat the Capitol and Panem at their games.

Her father[]

Katniss was very close with her father, and would go out hunting with him in the woods. He taught her how to use bow and arrows, as well as identify and forage edible plants. Her father would occasionally bring Katniss out to a lake in the woods, where she learned how to swim. Katniss and her father shared a love of music, and he would sing out in the woods. According to the book, whenever he sung, the mockingjays would stop to listen and copy the tune because of his beautiful singing voice. When Katniss was 11, Mr. Everdeen was caught in a mine explosion and was killed.

Her mother[]

Katniss’s relationship with her mom is complicated. When her husband dies in the mining accident, she fell into a deep, coma-like depression. This left Katniss to become the main provider and take care of all three of them. Katniss never outright hates her mother, but it is clear that she is mad about Mrs. Everdeen shutting her, Prim, and the world out. When Katniss volunteered for Prim, she sternly scolded her mother about making sure she didn’t do the same thing as when Mr. Everdeen died. She asked for her to be strong and take care of Prim, since she wouldn’t be there to hunt or trade for the family.

History[]

Early life[]

Katniss Everdeen was born and raised in District 12, the coal mining district of Panem. She lived in the Seam, the more poor part of the district, for most of her life. Her father, a miner and illegal hunter, taught her to hunt in the woods on the other side of the fence. What they caught, they traded in the black market, also known as the Hob to District 12 residents. Sadly, Katniss’s father died in a mining explosion when Katniss was eleven years old. Katniss then took over the family by hunting daily in the woods and selling game the Hob, to make some money for the family.

One day in the woods, Katniss found a line of snares. When inspecting those snares, Gale Hawthorne, the person who set those snares, saw Katniss inspecting his snares. Gale mistook Katniss for stealing, but after time the pair became the closest of friends, most assuming one day they would marry. But that was before Katniss met Peeta.
