After graduating from Nederland High School, John went to Michigan State University on a National Merit Scholarship and briefly pursued a physics degree before becoming an English major. Writing style[]

Varley's works are somewhat similar to those of Robert A. Heinlein, and they show somewhat similar libertarian and free-love positive viewpoints. A recurring theme in Varley's works is the exploration and colonization of the Solar system by humans.
