Gregory Dale Bear (1951-2022) was a science fiction author. A prolific author, Bear is largely remembered for his novel Darwin's Radio and being one of the co-founders of the San Diego Comic-Con.

Life[]

Born in San Diego in late August of 1951, Greg attended the State University of his birth city from 1968 to 1973 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at the University, Bear published his first science fiction story (Destroyers in 1967, printed in Famous Science Fiction) and served as a teaching assisstant to Elizabeth Chater (a future professor at the University and a future science fiction author).

Writing style[]

Greg Bear largely wrote science fiction novels. Notable themes include intergalactic war (showcased in The Forge of God and its sequel Anvil of Stars), parallel universes (showcased in the The Way series), and accelerated evolution (showcased in Blood Radio, Darwin's Radio, and its sequel Darwin's Children). He somewhat frequently worked for major franchises - illustrating the Star Trek reference book Concordance and writing the Star Wars novel Rogue Planet.
