Everything is Green is a vignette written by David Foster Wallace. Released in 1988, it is the ninth story in Wallace's collection Girl with Curious Hair and tells of a love between two people who are not on the same page.

Characters[]

  • Mitch - a somewhat old man
  • Mayfly - Mitch's somewhat younger lover

Plot[]

While in the kitchen of his trailer with his somewhat younger lover Mayfly, a forty-eight year old man named Mitch listens to her saying that she is telling the truth over something unknown. Mitch tells her that he doesn't care that he is older than her. Mayfly muses that everything is green but Mitch quickly thinks of the various things he can see around him that aren't green. While doing so, Mitch realizes that the relationship will soon be over - if it is not over already - and looks over her body while thinking this.
