Escape! is a nonfiction book written by Aron Spilken. Released in 1983, it tells of misfortune befalling a band of refugees from El Salvador.

Publisher's Summary[]

They were a middle-class group for El Salvador, desperate to escape the constant terrorism and threat of death in their homeland. It was illegal, of course, but fear drove them and they dearly for a trip that would win them freedom in the United States.

People like Ileana, hoping to join her husband who had already fled; Francisco, a youth under threat of assassination due to a case of mistaken identity; Robles the macho businessman looking for new worlds to conquer; Felicita, a beautiful young innocent being sent to safety. And all other frightened individuals whose dream of escape became a nightmare from which there was no escape.

Now for the first time one of the most gripping and horrifying epics of modern tragedy and courage is told in full, in a book that goes beyond the sensational news stories and shocking photos of lost, starving Salvadoran refugees - and the bodies of their dead countrymen. Based on extensive interviews with survivors and on-the-scenes research, the story begins with a close-up of an El Salvador where life has become a daily gamble with death. It reveals the vast underground network created by fortune-making businessmen like Jorge, who demand both money and sexual favors to aliens into the United States.

They suffer a wretched series of setbacks only to realize their ultimate betrayal when they are abandoned on the deadly burning sands of the Arizona desert. This is their story - the story of those who won their battle for survival, and of those who did not.

Not since Alive! has there been a true-life adventure that so graphically depicts the heights to which people will rise, and the depths to which they sometimes must descend, to cling to life. Rooted in the violence and terror of today, Escape! is timeless in its revelation of the strength of the human spirit facing nature at her most savage.
