Anji Kapoor is a major character within BBC Books' Eighth Doctor Adventures series.

Character[]

A companion of the Eighth Doctor, Anji comes from a roughly normal background - working as a futures trader in London. Escape Velocity states that she favours science over religion and prefers rational explanations. Shortly before joining the Doctor, Anji's boyfriend, Dave Young, is killed (this happening in Anji's debut novel, Escape Velocity).

Anji is described as either being of Indian (which most novels lean towards) or Pakistani descent (which is mainly only shown in The Domino Effect). Author Lance Parkin describes the somewhat inconsistent character of Anji Kapoor as thus in an interview with Daniel Berry:

The Indian background thing . . . when Colin Brake created her, I'm sure he thought nothing of it, but it's the sort of thing writers love to play with, and so suddenly there's more backstory, but it wasn't terribly well coordinated, so she was of both Pakistani and Indian origin, she was from a liberal household that was also religious and strict and so on, and you could almost hear us writers all thinking, 'What does her background mean?', which is a question with the best motives, but not one we would ever ask if she was Angie Cowper. [Another] problem is that we writers are all self-employed and basically sit around at home all day, and so for some of us 'working in an office' isn't, y'know, what every normal person does, we picture it as this weird world where people sell their soul and have empty, futile aspirations to be Ally McBeal if they're women and blokes in shaving gel ads if they're men. It didn't help that some of the writers saw Anji working specifically in financial services as somehow making her complicit in the deaths of every baby in the Third World since the dawn of time. As opposed to, say, not.

Travelling with the Doctor[]

Shortly after leaving Anji's near future, the Doctor travelled to the planet Lebenswelt for a vacation. Unfortunately, the Doctor began to suffer from strange epileptic fits and became involved in a failed attempt to steal an artefact known as The Book of the Still. Anji attempted to save the Doctor from Lebenswelt's extremely cruel prisons but found herself unable to do so before the Doctor broke out of the prison with a student named Rhian Salmond due to the arrival of marauding aliens known as the Unnoticed. While the Doctor saved the planet from a bomb left by the Unnoticed, Anji was kidnapped by a group of criminals named the Introlnductions Escort Agency and brought to the nearby planet of Antimasque after being injected with fast-chain memory acids.

While on Antimasque, Anji's captors stole the Book of the Still (which had been stolen by a former thrall of the Unnoticed named Carmodi Litian and brought to Antimasque) and then tried to leave the planet with the Book. Before they did this, Anji's memory acids made her try to attack her captors. As such, they teleported the Doctor and Rhian into their ship. This allowed the Doctor to get the upper hand on them and (after reading from the Book of the Still) use their ship to travel to the Unnoticed's Tent City (which sat within the photosphere of the Sun) and used the Book's pages as a glider to travel into the City. Once inside the City, Anji and the Doctor were reunited with Fitz (who had been kidnapped by Carmodi) and then watched as the members of IntroIntroductions merged into a singular creature which would eventually become the Unnoticed. This formed a loop which Anji (along with the Doctor and Fitz) were a part of. The three travellers were then sent careening back to Lebenswelt and then (after the Doctor tried to rescue Rhian from the clutches of the Unnoticed and found that she had already been rescued by Carmodi) left.[1]
