When Captain Fontenne marries a woman named Laurine, the friends of the couple expect the relationship to be short-lived. The two are opposites in personality. Despite this, the two seemingly get along together well.
In the summer of 1883, Fontenne joins into "grand Army manoeuvres of the 32nd Corps". After ten days working hard and living hard in bivouacs, the 32nd Corps hold a banquet. While in this banquet, Fontenne (who usually does not get drunk) gets extremely drunk. He wakes up the next day to find that he has slept with a prostitute. He feels extreme shame due to this and worries about how to tell his wife.
A month later, the two are reunited. Laurine notices that her husband is extremely nervous and begins prodding him to tell all. Though Fontenne is initially unwilling to tell he cracks and reveals his drunken act. Upon hearing of this drunken escapade, Laurine laughs at her husband.
