okay what i like to do is start by asking questions. how does that make you feel? when you watch some space documentary where they zoom all the way out and it shows you being a tiny glitter speck does it make you feel small? focus on how the different words of the prompt make you feel. does "infinite" make you feel intimidated, does the "scale of the universe" make you feel intrigued?
then, put those questions with their answers into a poem format. this could be anything -- free verse, some rhyming configuration etc.
after that, try to connect the dots. make metaphors that compare each question you have or compate the "minuteness" to something large in your life.
this gave me some ideas so i decided to write -- feel free to use mine for inspiration
space girl, earth girl
do you remember
that day in science class when
we watched the movie and
it zoomed all the way out, past the towns
and cities and countries and oceans and then it burst
we flew through the atmosphere and crashed out the
other side
then kept leaning over the edge, urging
onward. forward. faster. farther.
away.
all the way past the
moon and stars
then we still flew
far into the nothing
past the asteroid belt
there goes the sun.
then farther yet, hurtling
through galaxies and shells of life
until finally.
we reach our destination
and a man appears on the screen
and explains
this is the cosmic calendar.
and you are but a speck
a dust mite
in the farthest corner
because you dared be human.
