The Florida Storm {Original Story~}

TW: Blood.

It's a zombie apocalypse

Prologue:

“Dr. Kenzie to room 202,” Alicia’s radio went off. 27 year old Alicia Kenzie was a doctor at Sageview Local Hospital. She’s been a doctor for about 7 years now. And after the recent storm that passed through their town, she’s been working non-stop. Especially with what seems to be a new hazard existing. Not even rain was safe.

Alicia collected her stuff, then started walking to room 202, betting that this patient would be another death. So far, all of them have been. And the only thing they seem to have in common is that parts of the skin and muscles are gone, leaving the bones exposed. And the holes slowly continue to grow.

While the patients were still responsive, each of them said that those areas were where the rain came into contact. After the first death, scientists took the body to run tests on the areas. Alicia has been praying that the scientists would figure out what it was, and come up with an antidote before anymore casualties.

“What do you need me to do?” Alicia asked the two doctors in room 202 as she walked in. The bed in the middle of the room had the shape of a body covered in a blanket, confirming Alica’s thoughts from earlier.

“Dr. Kenzie, can you help Dr. Clark prepare the body for sampling? I’ll get more materials,” one of the doctors instructed, then walked out of the room.

“Got it,” Alicia put gloves on, then helped Dr. Clark prepare the body. She started on one of the areas, and cleaned it. Alicia suddenly felt a sting and gasped in surprise. She dropped her tool and held her hand, expecting it to go away after a second. But it didn’t.

“You okay?” Dr. Clark asked Alicia, having noticed her reaction.

“Yeah,” she moved her hand off the area to reveal a cut in the glove. She quickly took off her glove, hoping it wasn’t what she thought it was. But, to her dismay, a part of her skin was gone. And the gap was slowly growing, like the spots on the other patients.

Chapter Two~

“Who’s this?” Linda asked Adrianne when Linda pulled her aside.

“My brother,” Adrianne answered.

“You have a brother??” Linda glanced at the boy, who was on the ground, playing with the dog, and talking to Linda’s parents.

“Sorry for not telling you. I didn’t know you were interested in smelly jerky teenagers,” Adrianne flipped her hair and rolled her eyes, though it was in a joking manner.

“I’m not. I’m just surprised because you never said anything about him,” Linda watched him, “How come you never said anything about him?”

Adrianne shrugged, “I forgot I had one, honestly. I haven’t seen him in five years, and he never reached out to me. We don’t have a really good relationship right now, and my parents kinda gave up on trying to fix our relationship. He’s only here now because our parents had to travel for work.”

“Oh,” Linda glanced at her feet, then walked over, planning on introducing herself.

The boy glanced at Linda and waved. Linda waved back and sat down beside the boy. She petted the dog while introducing herself, “Hi, I’m Linda.”

The boy smiled, “I’m Andrew. What’s the dog’s name?”

“She’s Mochi.”

“Mochi? What a cute name,” he continued to pet the dog.

Linda nodded, feeling the conversation dying. So she decided to try to start another conversation, even if she already knew the answer, “What are you doing here? I’ve never seen you before.”

“Oh. I live an hour away from here, and my parents had to travel for work. So they dropped me off at my sister’s house. Though, I could’ve taken care of myself,” he sighed.

Linda nodded, “What do your parents do for work?”

“They’re both doctors. They went to the town next door to help after the storm passed through there. Lucky them, they don’t have to deal with the storm coming here.”

“Yeah,” Linda nodded again, I wish we didn’t have to deal with a storm, “Since both of your parents are doctors, do you have a big house?”

“Bigger than my sister’s house,” he pointed his thumb at the door leading to his sister’s house, “It’s a two story house with a lot of rooms. But our backyard is bigger. Our neighbors gave up their yard or something.”

“That’s cool. I’m sure Mochi would love running in that yard,” she glanced at the dog.

“You should come and bring Mochi over some time.”

"That sounds fun. Though, an hour drive doesn't,” Linda smiled.

“Actually, yeah. An hour drive isn’t fun.”

Linda was about to respond, but then she heard the BOOM of thunder outside. She flinched at the same time her dog jumped. Linda’s never been a fan of thunder. In fact, it’s one of her greatest fears, “I guess the storm’s getting closer.”

“Yeah. We’ll be fine, though. We’re underground, where the storm can’t touch us,” Andrew said, probably noticing the way Linda reacted to the thunder.

“Right,” Linda nodded, trying to find her headphones for when it came time to sleep. During this time of the day, she’s usually able to distract herself. But when it’s dark and she has time to lay down and focus on the thunder, she gets really anxious. Music helps, “Crap, did I forget to bring it down earlier?”

“What is it?” Andrew followed Linda’s gaze, confused.

“I forgot my headphones, but it’s not a big deal. I’ll just cover my ears with my pillow tonight,” she laughed, though it was a bit shaky.

Andrew opened his mouth to speak when Linda’s dad asked, “You forgot your headphones? I’ll get them for you,” and walked to the door leading upstairs.

“It’s fine! You don’t have to,” Linda waved her arms.

Her dad laughed, “A storm can’t stop me,” he opened the door. He walked through right as another clap of thunder sounded, causing Linda to flinch. Her dad closed the door behind him.

Chapter Three~

“Are you scared of thunder?” Andrew asked after a moment.

Linda nodded, “Which is kinda ironic since we live in a place with storms every year. You’d think I’d be used to it by now.”

“Well, you could say the same things about people afraid of bugs. Bugs are everywhere, yet people are still afraid of them. So, I won’t judge."

Linda grinned, “Are you afraid of bugs?”

“Nah, I’m not afraid of anything,” he waved his hand.

“Sure.”

“One hundred percent! Anyways, do you have board games or something we can play? Maybe that’ll help distract you.”

“Yeah. Lemme see what games we have,” Linda got up, just realizing how shaky she was. And it didn’t help when she heard BOOM twice in a row. She nervously ran her fingers through her hair, proud of herself for not flinching that time. Linda walked over to a cabinet packed with games, “Okay so, here are the games. Take your pick.”

Andrew had followed Linda to the cabinet, and was scanning the games, “Wow. You have a lot of games. Um, let’s go with The Game of Life.”

“Okay,” Linda reached up and grabbed the box from the shelf. She walked over to the middle of the room and sat down. She started setting up the game board. Andrew sat down across from her.

Adrianne came over, with Linda’s mom. and crouched down, “Can me and your mom play?”

“Yeah! I call green though,” Linda snatched the green car before anyone else could. The others called their colors and set their cars on the board. The final selections were: Linda having green, Andrew having blue, Adrianne having yellow, and Linda’s mom having pink. They started the game.

They played two games before Linda’s mom stood up, “He’s not back yet.”

“Who, dad?” Linda asked.

“Yeah. Imma go check on him,” Linda’s mom started walking to the door.

“Wait- err…” Linda was about to suggest that she come with, but then remembered how much louder the thunder would be up there. And besides, it probably wasn’t anything big. Her dad probably just fell asleep on the couch.

“Stay here. I’ll be back,” she opened the door, walked through, then closed the door behind her. Linda released a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding when there wasn’t any thunder. But she still had a bad feeling she couldn’t let go of.

Chapter Three Edited:

(I changed the ending of chapter three, so starting from where Adrianne and Linda's mom asked if they could join)

Adrianne came over, with Linda’s mom. and crouched down, “Can me and your mom play?”

Andrew snatched one of the cars and held it behind his back, “Oops, sorry. Looks like there’s not enough for you! Bye!”

Adrianne stuck her tongue out. Linda laughed and told Adrew, “Come on. A game with your sister won’t kill you.”

Adrew sighed, “Fine,” and placed the car back on the board.

Linda smiled at Andrew, then snatched the green car, “I call green!” The others grabbed their cars and placed them on the board. The final selections were; Linda with green, Andrew with blue, Adrianne with yellow, and Linda’s mom with pink.

They played a few rounds before Linda got up and flopped onto the couch. Her eyes were hurting, so she decided to close them for a minute.

Chapter Four:

(Warning: it's kinda rushed lmhoooi)

Linda opened her eyes and saw Andrew quietly playing with Mochi. Linda sat up.

“You’re awake!” Andrew exclaimed in a whisper as Mochi ran over to Linda.

Linda petted Mochi, “Yep. And it sounds like the storm’s gone.”

Andrew nodded. Linda got up and walked over to the nearest thing made out of glass so she could catch a glimpse of her appearance and fix her hair. She asked Andrew, “How early did you wake up?”

“Not too long ago. Probably 10 minutes before you did. I woke up to Mochi sniffing my face.”

Linda laughed and turned to face her dog, “Were you rude to the guest? That’s not very nice!” the dog barked. Linda turned back to Andrew, “Where’s Adrianne my mom?”

“Adrianne’s using the restroom and your mom went back upstairs to find your dad. She stayed up all night to see if he’d come back downstairs, but never did,” he frowned.

Linda frowned, anxiety bubbling up in her stomach.

Andrew, probably having noticed, tried reassuring Linda, “I’m sure they’re fine.

Before Linda could respond, a banging came from the door leading upstairs. Adrianne came out of the restroom as Linda ran to the door and opened it. Her mom and dad were at the door with horrible scratches, and their eyes seemed glazed over.

“What the..” Adrianne stared at the door. Linda’s dad made gurgling noises before swiping at Linda. Linda stumbled backwards, dodging it. Andrew caught Linda’s arm to steady her, shut the door in her parent’s faces, then ran to the door leading to Adrianne’s house.

“Adrianne, come on!” Andrew called to his sister as he opened the door. Adrianne ran over.

“But my parents!” Linda tried stopping Andrew.

“They just tried attacking you. We’ll check on them later once we have more preparation,” Andrew dragged Linda through the hall to his house’s basement before Linda’s parents could catch up, closed the door behind them, and locked it.

Linda crouched down and covered her face. She could hear the door being locked and Adrianne asking the exact same thing Linda was thinking; “What was that?”

“They looked like zombies,” Adrianne continued.

“My parents..” Linda was rewinding the moment in her head over and over again, wondering what just happened. She was so confused. Was it a prank, or was her parents actually hurt? Is it a new sickness? It was so sudden though. And she never saw anything like that before. “Argh, I can’t make any sense of it!” she let out a sob. That one sob led to another sob. And then another. They just kept coming, and she couldn’t stop. She felt arms wrap around her, and her head was now leaning on a shoulder. She took that as an invitation to let out all her tears, and continued to cry.
